Buying for an engineer or an architect has one specific difficulty: they read drawings for a living. They will notice things about a print that nobody else in the room does — whether the line weights carry any information, whether the dimensions measure anything a builder would need, whether the title block is filled in or just decoration.
That's a high bar. It's also a useful one, because it tells you exactly what to look for.
What makes a drawing survive that inspection
Three things, and they're the same three whether the subject is a bridge or a heart:
- Line weight hierarchy. Cut edges heavier than visible edges, visible edges heavier than hidden lines, hidden lines heavier than centrelines. Get this wrong and the drawing reads flat no matter how much detail is in it.
- Dimensions that point at real features. A dimension chain should measure something a builder would need.
- A title block that says something. Drawing number, scale, revision letter, sheet. It's the part nobody outside the trade reads and the first part anyone inside it looks at.

The structures, for the structural crowd

Matching the drawing to the discipline
Worth a minute of thought, because it's the difference between a nice gift and one they mention to people.
- Structural or civil — either bridge.
- Architect — City Hall or the Observatory. Both are buildings with a facade problem solved well, which is the job.
- Mechanical — skip architecture entirely and look at the full catalogue. An exploded-view assembly drawing lands harder with a mechanical engineer than any building will.
- Anyone who moved into management — whatever they trained in. It's the drawing they don't get to do any more.

What do you get an engineer who already buys their own tools?
Something that is not a tool. Anyone serious has already chosen their calipers and their mechanical pencil, and they chose better than you will. The gap is in things that are not functional at all — which is a harder brief, because it has to survive being looked at by someone who reads drawings for a living.
How do I choose without knowing their discipline?
Split it structural versus mechanical. Structural, civil and architectural all land on the bridges and buildings. For a mechanical engineer, skip architecture entirely — an exploded assembly drawing, where the parts are drawn pulled apart rather than assembled, lands harder than any building will.
Where do the drawings come from?
Expired US patents and public-domain structures, redrawn from scratch to the conventions in 37 CFR 1.84 rather than filtered from a photograph. If they want to go deeper, the Library of Congress's HABS/HAER measured-drawing collections are the primary record for the American structures, and browsing them is its own gift.
